“What was the best day?”

When one’s thoughts wonder to game rangers or game ranging, the first things most people think of is wildlife, wild Africa, wild elephants, gin and tonic sunsets, predators and prey acting out there life’s in front of clicking cameras or steamed up binoculars, this all unfolding in front of our star stuck eyes on a daily basis, reality check, far from it for me to break that fantasy, but there are no marauding lions on every corner , nor elephants or any other vast herds waiting patiently behind the nearest thorn tree for a game viewer to pass by so they can parade out to oohhs and aahhs and to the click whirr click of our cameras. The alarm rings at 3:30 am, time to get up, you read correctly 3:30 am, three in the morning. Why you may ask, well had to drop off guests at the gate, they had a early flight from Johannesburg to Mozambique and had to leave the lodge early, packed a coffee flask for on the way back, may as well do some game viewing on the route back from gate, if I have to get up that early, make it nice for the route, coffee and a smoke, that would equal a morning breakfast for me. Bush is green, animals are still here, lions sightings the last few weeks have been really good - not every day - but close enough to it. Ele’s are in the far north west of the reserve, what do they look like again? The occasional bull near the airstrip close enough to me to game drive there.

Read about some of this week’s action. A snapshot of the daily life on the game farm. Will we spot that big bull again? Will there be another lion kill at the top waterhole? Where are the cheetah cubs? Who were the coolest guests this week?

Had a interesting day yesterday, been some quite s**tty drives of late then yesterday morning,  followed a rhino bull for about 1/2 hour, would not get out of the road, he was following a female cow with calf.  She must be in estoruis, but was having none of it and spurring his advances. Saw a opprtunity to get past him -  and he saw me as competition! Lucky I did not put another dent in the car, full 2.3 ton rhino bull charging at me, while I am flooring it out of there….missed me by inches…..! Read the rest of this entry »

What a morning. Male cheetah killed an adult tessebe close to the road, visual 5 out of 5. Dig it man. Super relaxed around vehicle as well.

Sun is shining and a mild day today, but has not all been like that, had a period of rain and overcast for 5-6 days, horriable game drive weather.

On my birthday, I got a very big very dead white rhino (she died the day before, but I only saw it on my birthday) head ranger and I went up alone to take a look… Read the rest of this entry »
